ABOUT ABOUT

Join the South Carolina State Museum’s Education Director, Tom Falvey, as we take a tour through the 3rd floor exhibits and learn all about planes, trains, and automobiles! Did you know the first cars were taken to bicycle shops for repairs? Have you ever heard of a “barnstormer”? What do you know about “the Best Friend of Charleston”? We have LOTS to discover! We’ll finish up with a little lesson in physics and learn how to create our very own balloon cars. Materials you’ll need are listed below!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 x “body” for your car (I like to use a mini strawberry or tomato basket – just make sure it’s light weight)
  • 12 x straws (slightly larger than the sticks)
  • 2 x sticks or skewers (slightly smaller than the straw – they’ll need to move around inside the straw smoothly)
  • 4 wheels (bottle caps work great! I also like to make my wheels out of thick craft foam. Not all 4 need to be the same size. 2 can be bigger and 2 smaller if you’d like)
  • Tape! Lots of tape!
  • A few balloons (1 or 2 always pop)
  • Decorations!

Hot glue is always useful for this but not necessary

Overnight option: Join us at the Cathy Novinger Girl Scout Leadership Center to experience the First Friday Virtual Museum Event, Dinner, Movie and then sleepover in one of the exclusive bunks! In the Morning, wake up to a YUMMY Breakfast and participants who are not attending the Zombie Apocalypse Event will need to be picked up by 8am. Those participating in the Zombie Event will have to pack quickly to avoid the Outbreak!
