ABOUT ABOUT

Join us for a fun and exciting virtual event with the South Carolina State Museum.

History, Science, Ice Cream – what’s not to love? Whether we’re using liquid nitrogen to make it or making ice cream in a bag – State Museum Educators find any excuse to eat their favorite frozen treat! Join us as we take a little walk through history and learn about where our modern idea of ice cream comes from. Then we’ll make ice cream together in a bag and learn all about the science behind what’s happening. You’ll need a few materials listed below.
Materials Needed:
- 2 x 1-Gallon zip top bags
- 2 x 1-quart zip top bags
- A spoon
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cups
- 1 cup half and half, milk, or other ice cream base (different things will work, they’ll just take longer to turn into ice cream. And yes – strawberry or chocolate milk will make that type of ice cream!)
- 2-3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- A pinch of table salt
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (or other flavor if you’d like)
- 1 cup Rock Salt (kosh salt will work as well)
- Lots of ice! We’ll start with 2 cups and you’ll probably need to add more
- Toppings!
